Sounds like your system wants you to link X programs with extra
libraries. On ISC, these are -linet and -lpt. Maybe yours are similar.
If you tell me what the necessary libraries are, and what uname -a
returns on your system, perhaps I can make configure do the right thing
in the future.
Alternatively, disable X support in Metafont by undefining X11WIN in
lib/c-auto.h and remaking the MFwindow library.
